News: St. Lawrence student, Mann earns Paul Harris Fellowship

April 5, 2009

Joe Mann, of Mt. Calvary; was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Fond du Lac Morning Rotary Club.

Mann is a senior at St. Lawrence Seminary High School, in Mt. Calvary; and is the first Hilltopper to have received this prestigious award. He is the son of Mike and Joyce Mann.

The award, which included a medallion on a gold and blue ribbon, as well as a lapel pin and certificate, was given to Mann by the governor-elect of the Southeast Wisconsin Rotary; Dr. Bill Wresch, dean of the Business School at UW-Oshkosh.

Mann was selected to be a Paul Harris Fellow because of his public service since the age of six. In particular, Mann was cited because he exemplifies the Rotary principles and for his efforts to alleviate hunger.

These efforts, in part, include a mission trip to Monterrey; Mexico, to build a house in the summer of 2008, and his involvement in 4-H. Every summer for the past five years, Mann has served as a camp counselor to students aged 9-14 in the Fond du Lac area. He has also volunteered many hours of his time serving food, arranging tables, stocking food and carrying boxes of food for guests who are physically unable to do so at Broken Bread.

Finally, after Hurricane Katrina, in 2005, Mann arranged a program selling wristbands at St. Lawrence and in the local area. All proceeds went to support the families of St. Lawrence students from the New Orleans area whose homes were destroyed and whose families were temporarily displaced.

Mann's future plans, after graduating from St. Lawrence, involves either accounting or engineering. He is considering the Milwaukee School of Engineering and UW-Oshkosh. He has been offered an Air Force ROTC scholarship.
