Trail ProjectIn 2003, the Club sought out high profile community project related to outdoor recreation that would be suitable for a club sponsorship. After reviewing several city park projects and a multiple-purpose recreation trail project, the club voted in mid-2003 to provide and install recreation trail amenities for the Prairie Trail. The trail is part of the US 151 Bypass around the east and south side of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The 7 mile paved trail is suitable for bicycling, walking, running and rollerblading. When complete, the trail will be both a recreational facility and a bicycle commuter facility linking neighborhoods, schools, city parks, other area trails and local business and employment centers.
The club's budget for this project is $18,000. Trail amenities include benches at suitable rest locations, trailhead information kiosks, mile markers, trail identification signs and traffic signs. A detail of the budget follows below.
Work began in early fall of 2003 with construction of the first trailhead kiosk. When complete, this informational kiosk will feature a map of the trail, city bicycle routes and area parks. The Rotary International logo will be incorporated into this informational board. The picture to the right shows the installation of the first kiosk.
Traffic signs for trail users and trail name signs were also installed for the first segment of the trail, which opened with completion of first 3-mile segment of the new bypass.
Work on providing and installing trail amenities will continue in 2004 and 2005 as work progresses on the Fond du Lac Bypass and the Prairie Trail.
